How it works

How Fostr works, step by step: your agency's own forms, a visit recorded once, drafts from the worker's own notes, and a signed record that is sealed.

In short

Fostr is built to cut caseworkers' paperwork so they can spend more time with youth. Caseworkers record a visit once, and Fostr fills what the record already knows into the agency's own forms.

1.Your agency's own forms

We set Fostr up with your agency's own forms, so finished documents look the way they do today.

2.Pick the child and the form

Fostr fills in details the record already holds, like the child's name and date of birth. You answer the rest.

3.Write your notes once

Fostr runs in a web browser. Type your notes, or write them with Apple Pencil in our iPad app, which is still in testing and not yet available to agencies. Fostr turns your handwriting into text for you to check.

4.Drafts from your own notes

When a worker asks, Fostr fills in answers drafted from that worker's own notes. Each draft shows the notes it came from, and Fostr drops any draft that doesn't point back to them.

Answers Fostr drafts or copies for you can be undone in one step before you save. No draft becomes part of the record until the worker saves the form.

Fostr also drafts a short summary of each child's record, marked for workers to check. No AI model is trained on your data. The FAQ says more about how Fostr uses AI.

5.The same answers on your other forms

Fostr carries some answers onto your agency's other forms, such as monthly and court reports.

6.Check, sign and seal

Fostr won't let you save or sign a form until every required question has an answer. Before the record is filed in Fostr, the worker confirms it is complete and accurate and signs it.

Once signed, the record is sealed and can't be changed, and Fostr's audit log records who did what. Our Security page explains how records are protected.

7.What Fostr does not do

  • It does not send anything to a state system, or file anything with a court or any other authority for you.
  • It does not connect to a state system or to other case software, so it does not keep them in sync.
  • It does not replace caseworkers. They still write their own notes, check each form and sign it. The work and the judgment stay theirs.
  • Whether a court accepts a document is up to the court.

8.Where Fostr is today

No agency uses Fostr with real records yet. Agencies can try a demonstration that is set up for made-up records only. Real records come only after an agency signs a written agreement with us. Status shows what is open today.
